5 Simple Steps to Be Grounded When Life Gets Crazy

Life can get crazy from time to time. But it doesn’t mean you have to! Staying grounded in the midst of chaos is essential to personal development.


Grounded = Balanced state of mind


Years ago, I went through a series of personal & professional life challenges. Though most would describe me as an upbeat and down-to-earth gal, deep down, I was miserable.


I tried everything but kept feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and hopeless. In the midst of anxiety, anger and bouts of depression, I kept changing jobs, moving locations...yet nothing seemed to work.


During my not-so-great moments (#meltdowns), it wasn’t pretty. And you know what? It still happens from time to time!

Being present versus being reactive.


Practicing being present helped me find stillness and resist the urge to be reactive. This is especially helpful when my overwhelmed brain runs amok with all kinds of thoughts.


Over time, I noticed how others were able to be so resilient as they worked through their own struggles. So I began a quest to observe and learn from hundreds of inspiring women with amazing comeback stories.


With the help of supportive friends, mentors and family members, I kept an open mind to help me see each day with a silver lining.


Yoga, Reiki and all everything woo-woo!


During yoga and Reiki training, I learned effective techniques on how to reduce stress on a mental, physical, emotional, and energetic level.


I devoured motivational books, inspirational podcasts, and filled journals with notes from psychology journals and moving testimonials.


Each time I applied what I learned, I noticed that I started getting my bounce back faster whenever life threw another curve ball!


With an open mind, I kept what worked and tossed out what didn’t.


The following strategies have been useful for me when getting through some extremely stressful days, whether it was at the office or at home.


The more you practice being present, the easier it becomes and you’ll gradually start to notice a greater sense of grounding too!



  1. Take a breath: Notice your breath when you inhale and exhale.

  2. Consider what you are doing now: Where are your thoughts? Emotions? Sense of time?

  3. Become an observer: Have awareness of what you are doing.

  4. Release the rest: Whatever is not there in that moment let go.

  5. Return to the breath: Whether it’s distractions or scattered thoughts, simply come back to the breath.

Can you start the day off with taking a moment to be present? How about incorporating it into your morning routine? How about during your commute?


Staying grounded throughout the day takes practice.


As research continues to prove, taking time, even if it’s just one minute, has so many great benefits for the mind, body and soul.


Many people tend to think meditation requires sitting still and have a “blank” mind. But that is not the case.


There are so many types of meditations from sitting meditation to walking meditation. Mindfulling cooking a meal can even be meditative for those who love cooking!


Figure out your meditation style.


In order for meditation to be effective, we must be willing to face our thoughts when they come up. Sometimes past memories surface over and over again. The key is to feel it to heal it without running away to avoid the unavoidable.


By practicing meditation, our attention turns from thoughts that drain our energy to thoughts and situations that uplift us. Doing so, we may find that we are better able to notice all the silver linings around us.


Throughout the past decade, meditation has done wonders in maintaining peace and balance in my personal and professional life. The more consistent I am at incorporating meditation into my daily routine, the better I am at tapping into my intuition when making tough choices.


Thoughts versus reality.


Being aware of our thoughts helps us to see and know our thoughts as thoughts rather than getting caught up in them as a reality. Whether you prefer to sit, lie down, or walk, just take the first step even if it is just for a minute in the morning.


Taking some time to meditate at any point of the day can allow for emotional cleansing. This is because you’ve taken a moment to stop, observe, listen, and connect with your intuitive senses.


Otherwise, days, months and even years could pass by unnoticed.


When we practice our breathing exercises, such as through yoga, tai chi, and meditation, we allow ourselves to be more aligned with our soul purpose.


With a busy schedule and a busier mind, taking the time to meditate may be tricky. However, five minutes of practice can be as effective as an hour.


Intention matters most.


The sincerity of the effort matters far more than elapsed time since meditation is about stepping out of minutes and hours and into moments.


So find a comfortable seated position and focus on your breath. Perhaps you make want to visualize a mountain or a lake. Perhaps a walking meditation is better for you today.


If you choose to sit, notice your posture. I like to sit with my spine in a neutral, but not stiff, position. Think of sitting with dignity to embody that inner feeling of worthiness.
