How to Create Pin Titles That Get Clicks

Updated: Sep 14, 2019

On my best month, my website reached 1.5 million views just through Pinterest alone. And no, I didn't spend a single penny on ads. Also, I wasn't leveraging a content scheduler to help me calculate optimal times to pin either. So what was the secret sauce? It came down to pin titles.

How to Use Pinterest for Business

It goes without saying that Pinterest is a search engine tool. Not just any 'ol social media platform. For that reason, creating key word optimized titles is a powerful way to be found on Pinterest.

In addition to copy, pin images matter since Pinterest is a visual search engine tool. Not just any 'ol search engine platform. But I digress, let's get back to titles...

What kind of titles get more clicks? First let's start with a few basics. Key wording is the best way for your content to be found on Pinterest.

On Pinterest, it's not about the number of followers or monthly views. Both numbers do not accurately reflect website traffic or lead conversions.

In fact, a user with 10K followers can have more website views than a user with 5 times the number of followers. The same goes for monthly views.impressions.

Click through rates (CTR).

I track CTR stats closely. Not followers, impressions, monthly views or really any other vanity number out there. On Pinterest, it's all about the CTR followed by number of repins.

Viral pin titles have a few things in common.

Similar to blog titles, certain key words will catch the users eye over others. I like to conduct a key word search before naming a blog/pin title.

How to determine those key words: FAQ [insert topic]

What specific search terms are your target audience entering into the search bar? To find out, one easy way is to type in "FAQ [insert topic]".

For example, since I write a lot about Pinterest SEO, I would enter "FAQ Pinterest" or "FAQ SEO" or "FAQ Pinterest SEO".

Questions vs Statements

Blog pins that begin with How To, Best 3 Ways, 5 Simple Ways to, or any pin ending with "?" tend to get the most clicks.

For instance, "#1 Way to Create Viral Pins" would likely have a higher CTR than "Create Viral Pins on Pinterest".

Repin stats matter too!

Infographics get the most repins and shares but very low CTR. However, infographics are a great way to build brand awareness and have a higher likelihood of going viral over blog pins.

In my experience, below is the order of how I have been able to increase CTRs:

1. Blog pins

2. Infographics

3. Product Pins

Why are Product Pins at the bottom of the list?

As with any type of marketing effort, the "know, like and trust" factor is essential. It takes time to build trust before consumers are ready to open up their wallets.

They need to be "warmed" up. That's why I don't recommend directly linking pins to affiliate products or landing pages. Linking pins to blog posts or web pages helps to build that "know, like and trust."

Why is it taking forever for pins to go viral?

Hang tight. It can take at least a month to see progress when it comes to Pinterest SEO. If it takes so long, why even bother?

SEO can provide great results. But only with the right time investment.

There are so many factors to consider when trying to figure out how much time SEO will take to be successful.

Websites typically can see results in 4-6 months. SEO results grow over time. It takes different rates for different websites, different domains.

But the thing is, SEO strategy grows and compounds over time. It gives lasting results.

So continue SEO'ing the eff out of your Pinterest pin descriptions, boards + titles!
