How to Heal Others with Reiki Energy

Updated: Apr 7

More people around the world are beginning to pursue Reiki treatments for their health, finances, relationships, careers, and pet animals.

Celebrity health expert Dr. Oz suggests Reiki to many clients who wish to lose weight to those who are simply pursuing a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Oz stated: “We are embarking on this whole new vista of opportunities. It broadens dramatically the spectrum of where we might be able to go in our bodies.”

New trend by celebs and mainstream media?

There’s been a lot of hype around the health benefits of Reiki energy healing despite the holistic practice having been around for centuries. In fact, Reiki has been covered quite a bit in mainstream media, from Newsweek, The Drs, Oprah, and even Vanity Fair.

Regardless of the hype, Reiki has been used to enhance the effectiveness of various healing modalities for many decades. The healing energy will go where it is needed and do what is needed to facilitate shifts and natural healing.

Get comfy.

When treating others with Reiki, it is important to create a comfortable setting whenever possible. Whether or not you treat others from home, a healing centre or rent a therapy room, the room should be well-lit, clean, and feel safe.

Make sure you will not be interrupted by distractions, such as the telephone or doorbell. If possible, use a therapy table. You will need two pillows for the client’s head and under the knees.

Make sure the room is heated to a comfortable level as some people may get cold just lying still on your treatment table. Thus, have a warm blanket available.

You may find that adding a plant and some crystals under your table is pleasant. Some people like to work in total silence during a session while others prefer to have soft music playing in the background.

Set the environment.

There is music available that has been created specifically for Reiki sessions. They have been designed to run for the length of a full treatment with a bell or chime added at 3-5 minute intervals to let the therapist know when to move their hands to another position.

Burning incense or oils can add a pleasing aroma to your room. However, be careful as some people are sensitive to certain smells and it may cause them to experience an unpleasant session.

During a Reiki session, client may become emotional and cry as they release blocked issues. Thus, always keep a box of tissues handy for these occasions.

Personal prep for the session.

Reiki can travel through all materials such as stone, brick, concrete and metal. However, the metal and stones used in the manufacturing of jewellery come into contact with and attract and store energy.

It is ideal to remove all jewelry such as rings, watches, earrings, chains and necklaces from yourself and ask your client to remove any jewelry as well.

Practitioners who work with precious stones and crystals for healing recognize that these materials can become saturated with negative energy. That is why they cleanse them on a regular basis.

To allow Reiki to flow freely through you and your client, remove tight clothing such as belts, ties and shoes. This will also make you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Reiki can travel through clothes so there is no need to remove any other forms of clothing. You may find it more comfortable if you wear loose fitting clothes when you are working with Reiki.

Alcohol depresses energy. Always refrain from consuming alcohol and any mind altering substances if you know you are going to be working with Reiki for at least 24 hours before a session.

Wash your hands before a Reiki session using a lightly scented or neutral soap. Your hands come into contact with your client so it is important for hygiene purposes and the peace of mind of your client to have clean hands.

Set your Intention.

It is important to remember that as a Reiki practitioner you are not healing your clients. The person receiving Reiki is healing themselves.

You are the channel that enables them to draw the Reiki energy through your hands to the places it is needed. Setting this intention will serve as a reminder that you are a witness and not actively doing anything.

Although this is not necessary to perform a Reiki session, it is an effective way to disassociate yourself from your ego and agenda and pay respect to the universal life force and the recipient.

You may wish to ask for permission to be used as a channel for Reiki healing. You do not have to say your intention out loud, you can just pause for a moment before you begin your session and set your intention.

Aura cleanse.

You may find it helpful to do a general clearing of your client’s aura prior to commencing the Reiki treatment. You would run your hands along your client’s aura about 6 inches above their body.

Start from their head. Move your hands down to their feet in a slow motion at least 3 times to remove any superficial energy that has accumulated.

Pay attention to your hands, use your intuition, sense for possible blockages or hot spots to focus on during your healing session.

Important Do's and Don'ts.

Before you begin a full body session on another person there are a few important points to remember.

Do not perform Reiki on a person who has a pacemaker as Reiki can alter its rhythm.

Do not perform Reiki on a person who suffers from diabetes mellitus and is taking insulin injections, unless they are prepared to check their insulin levels every day as Reiki reduces the amount of insulin required.

It is recommended to have the client complete a form that outlines all of their physical and emotional conditions. This will help you determine if Reiki is the appropriate modality for them as well as to help you monitor your progress.

It's important to explain to a person who is visiting you for the first time for a Reiki session exactly what you are going to do and the type of reactions that might occur.

Explain that any one of these reactions are normal. They may experience 1 or 2 of these reactions, all of them or none of them. It makes no difference. Reiki will go wherever it is needed.

If the client does not experience anything, you can explain to them that Reiki energy often works on a subtle level but has profound results over time and can normally become apparent in the following days or weeks.

Although it is helpful to have an understanding of what imbalances the client is aware of. Forget about the symptoms and treat the whole person. In many cases, imbalances with symptoms in one area have additional imbalances in other areas.

Listen to your client’s body through your hands. Sense the different types of energy. If you feel that the energy is strong keep your hands in that position until your sense a shift in the energy level.

Begin the Reiki treatment.

Ensure your client is lying flat on the table fully clothed with their arms down by their sides. Their legs should also be flat against the table and should not be crossed as this can block the flow of Reiki.

Gently lay your hands on your clients’ body. For injured or sensitive areas such as the face, throat, chest and genitals, you will not want to place your hands directly on the client.

In those areas, hold your hands approximately 4-5 inches above the body. For clients with touch issues you can perform the entire session with your hands above the client’s body rather than in contact with it.

Keep your hands in each position for between 3-5 minutes. As you become more experienced you will use your intuition to guide you regarding the length of time you spend in each position.

Your fingers should be together when your hands are in position. This keeps the channel strong between your client and the universal life force. If your fingers are spread apart the current of Reiki energy tends to be weaker just as water would slip through your open fingers.

At the end of a session always offer your client a glass of cold water to aid in grounding. You will also want to wash your hands in cold water after each session. This will help your body and mind feel that the session has ended.

Hand positions.

There is not an exact number of hand positions when healing others with Reiki. Simply trust Reiki and your intuition.

Ending the session.

When you have completed the session, place your left hand on your clients crown chakra and your right hand above the base of their spine (root chakra). This final position helps to balance the energy.

You may also want to complete your session by sweeping your client’s aura. You can do so by sweeping your hands above the client’s body from the crown down to the feet.
