Can’t stand another day at your 9-5? Ready to take the leap even without another job lined up? At the very least, let’s make sure you get your finances in order so it’s more of a “calculated” leap of faith.
Not too long ago, I took this same leap of faith...several times.
After almost ten years working in the public sector, I wanted out. I wanted to do something completely different.
But with all the office politics going on, it was hard to find stillness and figure out what I really wanted in my career. My decision to leave without another job lined up may have seemed irrational on the surface, especially with 20 years left on my mortgage.
But I needed to step away from the toxic work environment ASAP.
Fortunately, things panned out much better than expected. It’s not to say it was an easy journey though…
Not for the faint of heart.
Throughout my career in both public and private sector, I’ve taken several leaps of faith. Several of the leaps did not include a Plan B. It worked out fine for me but I would not recommend that route to everyone.
Get your financial ducks in a row ASAP.
Even as a business major in college, one would think I’d be better with my personal finances. I figured, all I had to do was make more than I spend. Right? Wrong.
It wasn’t until I realized how much I craved freedom from a cubicle that I started waking up to my beliefs and habits around money. And when I really couldn’t stand my job, I knew I needed to have a financial freedom plan.
What is F-You Money?
In light of the #MeToo movement, F-You money is especially crucial. If you are going into a hostile workplace each day, it’s time to say F-You to that.
F-You money is a 6-12 month emergency savings fund. An emergency fund can also provide peace of mind in case of a layoff or unexpected medical expense.
Over the years of working in a male dominated “old boys club” environment, I’ve leveraged my emergency fund as F-You money. Having resigned from my job without a plan, it has taken the pressure off of having to find another job immediately.
It takes more than just cutting coupons.
It takes more than just a six-figure or more salary too! The journey to financial freedom requires you to have your hard earn money working for you!
There are a gazillion ways to achieve Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE). From real estate to stock market investing and everything in-between. The choice is yours!
Start a blog, rent out my car, I tried a lot of different side hustle gigs. Get your creative juices flowing!
Prior to each leap, I tapped into my intuition.
Before I quit, I was doing a lot of soul searching in order to be more intentional about my job searches. Otherwise, I would be aimlessly sending out online applications and wasting a lot of time.
Doing the soul searching is an ongoing process, even once you find that dream job. So start now! Need ideas? Not sure where to start?
Here are my favorite work from home opportunities that I came across during job searching phase.
