Quit Your 9-5 Without a Plan B? Now What?

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

So you decided to take the leap? First, congratulations! It takes a lot of courage.

Not too long ago, I took this same leap of faith. I was working in the public sector and wanted to do something completely different. It was time to explore the world of entrepreneurship!

My decision to leave without another job lined up may have seemed irrational on the surface, especially with 20 years left on my mortgage. But fortunately, things panned out much better than expected this time around.

Throughout my career in both public and private sector, I’ve taken several leaps of faith. Many of the leaps did not include a Plan B. It worked out fine for me but I would not recommend that route to everyone.

Prior to each leap, I tapped into my intuition. We all have it, but doesn’t mean it’s easy to sort through the inner debating committee chatter. The point is to find stillness in order to listen what our instinctive feeling, that inner voice, is trying to tell us.

When we are able to tap into our intuition, we are better able to manifest our next breakthrough. So let’s get into what action steps you can take right now to get you closer to your dream career!

Look for the side door.

If you’ve been trying to get a foot in the door but just haven’t been successful, then it’s time to reset. Sometimes opportunities seem to be hidden because we aren’t looking in the right place.

Get your foot in the door with an internship, part-time job, or full-time job in the industry you want to be working in.

For instance, say you are an investment banker and your passion is photography. You decided to you want to make a switch to be a wedding photographer. Then seek a position with wedding event planners, even if this means a pay cut!

It may be hard to make a living being a wedding photographer right off the bat especially if you haven’t been doing it full-time. So the least you can do is get your foot in the door of the industry that you are trying to get into to.

It’s easy to get caught up in going after the shiny object or the first job that comes your way right after you resign from your job. Typically this will still be in the same industry as the one you are trying to leave.

But if you really want to make the change, the best way forward is to get your foot in the door first. So look for the "hidden opportunities" you may be overlooking.

I was overwhelmed with all the opportunities that came my way because they paid at least 30% more than my last job. But all the opportunities were still in the same industry that I was trying to leave behind.

Instead, I took on employment at the local studio teaching free community classes and getting paid minimum wage working at the front desk. This allowed me to network among yoga teachers and studio owners which in turn created synergy with my business of combining personal finance and wellness.

Live as if.

Ever heard of the expression “fake it until you make it”? Introduce yourself using the title of your dream profession. It is a common catchphrase that means to live as if you have whatever it is you want. Doing so helps to build the momentum in manifesting what it is you are after.

For instance, using the last scenario, rather than saying “I’m unemployed” or “I was an investment banker”, tell people you are a wedding photographer.

When you start doing this, you are putting out there your services and letting others respond accordingly, whether it’s telling you about a friend who is getting married or keeping you in mind the next time they come across someone getting married.

Prior to even leaving my 9-5, I told people I was a yoga teacher, even when I was still in the midst of my certification training. I taught a few classes but it didn’t mean I was a seasoned teacher by any means. Nevertheless, this opened up so many conversations about opportunities in the wealth and wellness industry.

Once I left my 9-5, I continued to introduce myself as a personal finance blogger and yoga teacher in my introduction. By doing so, I attracted a number of leads and most importantly, allowed me to get my services out there.

In addition, saying out loud helped me mentally, emotionally, and energetically prepare for the next chapter of my career as saying it out loud made my ideal profession became “real.”

Get your financial ducks in a row.

My financial history is far from perfect. There are many things I wish I did differently with my money in my 20’s and early 30’s. I made a lot of financial mistakes from not investing early to overspending on things I didn’t need.

Even as a business major in college, one would think I’d be better with my personal finances. I figured, all I had to do was make more than I spend. End of story.

It wasn’t until I realized how much I craved freedom from a cubicle that I started waking up to my beliefs and habits around money. And when I really couldn’t stand my job, I knew I needed to have a financial freedom plan.
