During my mid-30s, I took time off from my 9-5 to embark on an Eat, Pray and Love journey. I was completely burned out from my job of 8 years and my personal life was even more chaotic.
I decided to take a leap of faith. I quit without much of a plan B.
That’s how desperate I was.
All I knew was that I hit rock bottom and needed to realign with my soul path. This began an unexpected path towards healing my past as an adult child of an alcoholic father.
Before we go over some simple simple Reiki energy healing techniques, let’s cover the basics...
What is Reiki?
Reiki is universal life force energy. When you incorporate Reiki into your busy lifestyle, you are better able to gain an overall sense of well-being and raise your energetic vibrations.
We can all access universal energy at anytime throughout our busy day. Whether or not you are a Reiki master, everyone has access to the healing power of universal healing energy.
Reiki energy works with the law of attraction to help balance your chakras (energetic centers). When your chakras are balanced, you are better able to raise your vibrations.
I received my Reiki Master training from an inspiring Reiki Master, Lisa Powers. Lisa is the author of Reiki: Level I, II, and Master Manual.
The Reiki: Level I, II, and Master Manual is a helpful and easy to read guide for anyone who wants to learn Reiki. Whether a beginner or advanced practitioner, this guide shows how to perform Reiki on yourself and others.
According to the Reiki: Level I, II, and Master Manual, by incorporating Reiki into your busy lifestyle, to include your self-care routine, you can achieve emotional and physical wellness…even if you only have minutes to spare.
How does Reiki energy work?
Reiki goes to the place in the body that is imbalanced and requires healing. Placing your hands on or above the body allows the energy to be drawn in. Reiki energy will then go where it is needed.
When you come up against personal and/or professional difficulties in life, Reiki is able to help provide you the strength and awareness to handle the challenges.
Daily Reiki self-treatment may help to prevent sickness and bring your life into focus and balance quickly. Accordingly, practice Reiki self-treatments to recharge your energy daily, not just when difficulties or illnesses surface.
What are the 14 common traits of someone brought up in an alcoholic household?
According to the Adult Children of Alcoholics World Service Organization, there are 14 common traits of someone being brought up in an alcoholic household. The characteristics are referred to as The Laundry List:
1) We became isolated and afraid of people and authority figures. 2) We became approval seekers and lost our identity in the process. 3) We are frightened by angry people and any personal criticism. 4) We either become alcoholics, marry them or both, or find another compulsive personality such as a workaholic to fulfill our sick abandonment needs. 5) We live life from the viewpoint of victims and are attracted by that weakness in our love and friendship relationships. 6) We have an overdeveloped sense of responsibility, and it is easier for us to be concerned with others rather than ourselves; this enables us not to look too closely at our own faults, etc.
7) We get guilt feelings when we stand up for ourselves instead of giving in to others. 8) We became addicted to excitement. 9) We confuse love and pity and tend to “love” people we can “pity” and “rescue.” 10) We have “stuffed” our feelings from our traumatic childhoods and have lost the ability to feel or express our feelings because it hurts so much (Denial). 11) We judge ourselves harshly and have a very low sense of self-esteem. 12) We are dependent personalities who are terrified of abandonment and will do anything to hold on to a relationship in order not to experience painful abandonment feelings, which we received from living with sick people who were never there emotionally for us. 13) Alcoholism is a family disease; we became para-alcoholics and took on the characteristics of that disease even though we did not pick up the drink. 14) Para-alcoholics are reactors rather than actors. Through attending weekly ACA meetings, I began to better understand myself and most importantly, “re-parent myself” back to life through energy healing (Reiki). How can Reiki healing be applied to each of the 14 traits?
There are numerous ways to apply Reiki self-care to heal from past traumas and ongoing challenges. In my case, I started with shifting my mindset by surrendering to the Universe.
I set the intention each day to allow the frequency of Reiki universal energy guide and support me in my healing process. Doing so allowed me to begin to be more open to the energetic frequency of love.
By releasing the need to control, I invited more space to accept the authority of the loving Universal energy.
Set the Intention
Aside from mindset shifts and surrendering to Reiki universal energy, other specific Reiki techniques can help to address each of the 14 traits. This includes reciting the 5 Reiki principles as morning affirmations to set the intention of living a healthier, loving way of life.
The 5 principles are guidelines helping individuals live a lifestyle that aligns with healing positive energy on a daily basis.
Just For Today:
I release angry thoughts and feelings
I release thoughts of worry
I’m grateful for my many blessings
I practice expanding my consciousness
I’m gentle with all beings including myself
Another method of applying Reiki to address the 14 traits is to channel Reiki energy to a specific chakra that needs healing. Many times, the root chakra needs the most healing as it is associated with family, security, and a sense of belonging.
Reiki symbols can also be used to help channel healing energy towards a specific trait or chakra. Specially, the Se He Ki symbol is ideal for fostering emotional healing.
There are no hard and fast rules on how to apply Reiki healing to each of the traits. The possibilities are endless when an individual sets the intention for healing.
