Ever wonder what is a shaman? Is being a shaman the same as being an energy healer? A shaman is regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of spiritual beings.

Shamanism: an ancient healing tradition

Shamans have knowledge and the power to heal by entering into the spiritual world, to include other dimensions. Most shamans have dreams or visions that convey certain messages.

A shaman may have or acquire many spirit guides, who often guide and direct the shaman in his or her travels in the spirit world.

The shaman heals within the spiritual dimension by returning 'lost' parts of the human soul from wherever they have gone. The shaman also cleanses excess negative energies in order to heal the soul.

Shamanism: a way to connect with nature and all of creation

Shamanism can be used to describe the ancient spiritual practices of indigenous cultures. As all ancient spiritual practices are rooted in nature, shamanism is the method by which people can strengthen that natural connection.

Over time, the term “shamanism” has been popularized throughout the western world, especially in new-age circles.

Sometimes it can be tricky to differentiate between traditional and modernized forms of shamanism. Overall, most view shamanism as the universal spiritual wisdom inherent to all indigenous tribes.

Shamanism stems from nature itself.

Shamanic practices tap into the power Mother Earth has to offer and the ancient indigenous teachings are derived from the simple truths of nature.

Shamanism is based on the premise that the visible world is pervaded by invisible forces or spirits which affect the lives of the living.

Although the causes of disease lie in the spiritual realm, inspired by malicious spirits, both spiritual and physical methods are used to heal.

Medicinal plants

Many shamans have expert knowledge of medicinal plants native to their area, and an herbal treatment is often prescribed.

In many places shamans learn directly from the plants, harnessing their effects and healing properties, after obtaining permission from the indwelling or patron spirits.

Perhaps you are a shaman and you don’t even know it!

Shamanism is not only concerned with the health of the individual, but also with the health of the entire community. This includes all people, plants, animals, the planet, and all of life.

Some individuals are shamans and don’t know it. Many naturally wind up in healing professions, such as medicine, psychology, or life coaching.

Others may wind up in various forms of sacred activism, healing the planet, for example, rather than healing people.

Here are three signs that indicate you may fit the description of a shaman.

1. You feel a strong sense of calling to raise the global shift in consciousness.

Individuals with the shamanic qualities don’t just feel it, they feel it pulling them, like a magnet, towards leadership positions that help facilitate this transformation of human consciousness. They also feel a sort of spiritual calling to ease the suffering of people, animals, and nature.

Perhaps, you’ve been through a difficult past, which has prepared you for such a leadership role. You may have not only survived but overcome some sort of trauma that encouraged you to pursue being a light for others.

2. You feel at your best when in nature.

Shamans are very much like the translators between the mountains, oceans, rivers, animals, and people. The shamans of a culture are the bridges between nature and humans.

Thus, when in nature, shamans sense that nature is “talking to them”, particularly when they receive intuitive messages.

3. You are an empath.

An empath is someone who is energetically sensitive to their surroundings. Empaths feel, see, hear, smell, and sense things others don’t.

Others may stay empaths are “overly emotional” or “too sensitive.” But this sensitivity is a blessing.

Sacred symbols

Legends say that before there was language, there were the sacred symbols. The Medicine Wheel, the Curse, the Eagle, and others spoke to people intimately.

The symbols offered hope, expressed caution, illuminated opportunity, inspired creation, courted power, and shared knowledge.

The sacred symbols belong to the realm of archetypes and the collective unconscious, the spiritual common ground shared by peoples modern and ancient.
